Request for Committee Volunteers

Local 1944 has several committees that work on specialized areas to strengthen the union by making recommendations, engaging members, organizing events, and protecting members’ rights in the workplace. Learn more about the various committees below.

  1. Civil and Human Rights Committee
    Local 1944 wishes to advise members that the Local 1944 Civil and Human Rights Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.

    The Committee generally meets 4 times a year either in person or by conference. You would be expected to keep yourself informed on current Civil and Human Rights issues within your workplace as well as communicate these issues to the rest of the committee.

    It is preferred that members have experience in the area of Human Rights and/or Respectful Workplace, are good communicators and have a strong desire to protect the rights of others.

    Consideration is to be given to ensure regional representation on the committee.

    The committee currently requires:

    • 1 member from BC
    • 1 alternate member from BC
    • 1 member from Alberta
    • 1 alternate member from Alberta
    • 1 alternate member from Ontario
    • 1 alternate member from Quebec

  2. Next Generation Committee
    Local 1944 is looking for young members to participate in our Next Generation committee. The purpose of this committee is to reach out to our young members in an effort to better address their needs and concerns. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations on what the union can do to better promote participation of our Next Generation members.

  3. Women of Steel Committee
    Our Women of Steel committee mandate is to work in solidarity with sisters and brothers to raise awareness of women’s issues; increase the involvement and participation of women in the union; support organizing and outreach efforts in the community; support union campaigns for women’s equality and progressive political change.

  4. Political Action Committee
    Local 1944 wishes to advise members that the Local 1944 Political Action Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.

     

    The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to become involved in political action in your surrounding community.

    It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions, are good communicators and have a strong desire to involve people in political action and action campaigns.

    Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

    The committee currently requires:
    • 1 member from British Columbia
    • 1 member from Quebec
    • 1 member from Ontario

  5. Plant Steering Committee
    Steering Committees will soon be created in order to assist the Union with networking platforms that are paramount to the Union's success and preparation for bargaining. Steering Committees will meet via conference calls, discuss workplace issues and concerns, and assist the Union in developing strategies for addressing problems in the workplace.

    For the Plant/Craft Steering Committee we are seeking volunteers who are working in the following areas: I & R, Business Technicians, Construction, Splicers, Plant Service People, and Network, C.O.

    If you work in one of the above-noted areas, are a member in good standing, have an interest in improving your work life and supporting your co-workers, and would like to volunteer, please express your interest by applying.

     

    Plant Steering Committee Mandate:


    1. The purpose of the Plant Steering Committee will be to gather information, coordinate information sharing between locals with Plant members.
    2. The Plant Steering Committee will meet by telephone or video conference as required.
    3. The Plant Steering Committee will submit a budget for the next year to the Finance Committee by Dec 15th of each year.
    4. The Plant Steering Committee will be composed of one Business Agent who is assigned to service one or more locals with Plant members, and Plant members from various locals appointed by the President and approved by National Executive Council.

  6. Clerical Steering Committee
    Local 1944 is calling for members of the TELUS Bargaining Unit to volunteer in a new networking initiative - Workplace Steering Committees.

    Steering Committees will soon be created in order to assist the Union with networking platforms that are paramount to the Union's success and preparation for bargaining. Steering Committees will meet via conference calls, discuss workplace issues and concerns, and assist the Union in developing strategies for addressing problems in the workplace.

    Under Clerical Steering Committee we are currently seeking volunteers from the following areas: At-Home Agent, Business, Residential and Credit Card Call-Centres (wireless and wire line).

    If you work in one of the above-noted areas, are a member in good standing, have an interest in improving your work life and supporting your co-workers, and would like to volunteer, please express your interest by applying.

  7. Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee
    Local 1944 wishes to advise members that the Local 1944 Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee. The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to assist in monitoring the contracting out of members' work and making recommendations to National Executive Council in order to protect the interests of Local 1944 members. It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions and are good communicators. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  8. Technology Committee
    Local 1944 is looking for young members to participate in the Union's newly created Technology Committee, whose purpose is to study new technology and its possible effects on our members. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the Local 1944 National Executive Council on what the Union can do to prepare for and to respond to new technology. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  9. Public Awareness Committee
    Local 1944 is seeking members in good standing from across the country for appointment to the Public Awareness Committee. The committee will work in conjunction with appointed officers to develop and coordinate campaigns as mandated by the National Executive Council. Committee members will meet primarily by teleconference.
