Request for Volunteers for TWU Committees

The Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) wishes to advise the membership that there is at present vacancies within the following appointed committees:

  1. Public Awareness Committee

    The TWU is seeking members in good standing from across the country for appointment to the Public Awareness Committee. The committee will work in conjunction with appointed officers to develop and coordinate campaigns as mandated by the National Executive Council. Committee members will meet primarily by teleconference.

  2. TWU Civil and Human Rights Committee

    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Civil and Human Rights Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.

    The Committee generally meets 4 times a year either in person or by conference. You would be expected to keep yourself informed on current Civil and Human Rights issues within your workplace as well as communicate these issues to the rest of the committee.

    It is preferred that members have experience in the area of Human Rights and/or Respectful Workplace, are good communicators and have a strong desire to protect the rights of others.

    Consideration is to be given to ensure regional representation on the committee.

    The committee currently requires:
    2 members from BC
    1 alternate member from BC
    1 alternate member from Alberta
    1 member from Ontario
    1 alternate member from Ontario
    1 alternate member from Quebec

  3. TWU Plant Steering Committee

    Steering Committees will soon be created in order to assist the Union with networking platforms that are paramount to the Union's success and preparation for bargaining. Steering Committees will, meet via conference calls, discuss workplace issues and concerns, and assist the Union in developing strategies for addressing problems in the workplace.

    For the Plant/Craft Steering Committee we are seeking volunteers who are working in the following areas: I & R, Business Technicians, Construction, Splicers, Plant Service People, and Network, C.O.

    If you work in one of the above noted areas, are a member in good standing, have an interest in improving your work life and supporting your co-workers, and would like to volunteer, please express your interest by applying.

    Plant Steering Committee Mandate:

    1. The purpose of the Plant Steering Committee will be to gather information, coordinate information sharing between locals with Plant members.
    2. The Plant Steering Committee will meet by telephone or video conference as required.
    3. The Plant Steering Committee will submit a budget for the next year to the Finance Committee by Dec 15th of each year.
    4. The Plant Steering Committee will be composed of one Business Agent who is assigned to service one or more locals with Plant members, and Plant members from various locals appointed by the President and approved by Executive Council.

  4. TWU Clerical Steering Committee

    The TWU is calling for members of the TWU/TELUS Bargaining Unit to volunteer in a new networking initiative - Workplace Steering Committees.

    Steering Committees will soon be created in order to assist the Union with networking platforms that are paramount to the Union's success and preparation for bargaining. Steering Committees will, meet via conference calls, discuss workplace issues and concerns, and assist the Union in developing strategies for addressing problems in the workplace.

    Under Clerical Steering Committee we are currently seeking volunteers from the following areas: At-Home Agent, Business, Residential and Credit Card Call-Centres (wireless and wire line).

    If you work in one of the above noted areas, are a member in good standing, have an interest in improving your work life and supporting your co-workers, and would like to volunteer, please express your interest by applying.

    Clerical Steering Committee Mandate:

    1. The purpose of the Clerical Steering Committee will be to gather information, coordinate information sharing between locals with Clerical members.
    2. The Clerical Steering Committee will meet by telephone or video conference as required.
    3. The Clerical Steering Committee will submit a budget for the next year to the Finance Committee by Dec 15th of each year.
    4. The Clerical Steering Committee will be composed of one Business Agent who is assigned to service one or more locals with Clerical members, and Clerical members from various locals appointed by the President and approved by Executive Council.


  5. TWU Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee
    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee  is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee. The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to assist in monitoring the contracting out of members' work and making recommendations to Executive Council in order to protect the interests of TWU members. It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions and are good communicators. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  6. TWU Technology Committee
    TWU is looking for young members to participate in the Union's newly created Technology Committee, whose purpose is to study new technology and its possible effects on our members. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the Union can do to prepare for and to respond to new technology. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  7. National Health & Safety Committee
    The National Health and Safety Committee is looking to fill the following position(s). Only TWU members in good standing working in the following areas will be considered at this time:

    • One member from Stratcom
    • One member from Ontario
    • One alternate member from Ontario

    Health and safety experience and/or training is an asset, but members who have an interest in learning about health and safety issues will be considered. Duties of members appointed include the following; promoting health and safety in their respective area, providing input to the committee on issues in their industries, and will be responsible for following up on health and safety concerns with their employer. As well, they will act as a liaison for members in their respective workplaces with respect to health and safety issues, including ergonomics. The committee meets, either by conferencing or face-to-face meetings, up to six times per year, as required, but members are also required to follow up on issues or projects between meetings.

  8. TWU Political Action Committee
    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Political Action Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.
    The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to become involved in political action in your surrounding community.
    It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions, are good communicators and have a strong desire to involve people in political action and action campaigns.
    Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee. The committee currently requires:
    • 1 member from Quebec
    • 1 member from Ontario

     

  9. TWU Next Generation Committee
    TWU is looking for young members to participate in the union's newly created Next Generation committee, whose purpose is to reach out to our young members in an effort to better address their needs and concerns. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the union can do to promote participation of our younger members.
